Donate to a Worthy Cause

There are many ways to give -- it may be a few dollars, needed supplies, food, clothing, your time, or some lother property you own that you no longer need and someone else can use that otherwise would just end up in one of the landfills that threaten our environment. Everyone can do their part!

It doesn't have to be a formal charitable organization where you get a tax deduction for your donation, but give directly to anyone who you see is in need.  They may not benefit from nor have access to the programs offered by many of the registered charities.

Animal Shelter Finder - Help homeless and abandoned critters. Adopt, foster, or donate your time, money, or supplies.

AVID - Helps kids struggling in school prepare for college.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America

Boys & Girls Clubs of America

1-800-CharityCars - Provides donated free vehicles to struggling families. 100% charity - no middlemen.  Get rid of that car with free towing nationwide. Full market value tax deductible writeoff if the car is able to be used by a needy family.  Click or call 1-800-242-7489.

Cars4Christmas and Cars4Heroes - Free vehicles for disadvantaged veterans and other individuals in need of basic transportation.

Cars Helping Veterans - Over 200,000 veterans will sleep on our nation's streets tonight. However, we believe that no one who put his or her life on the line to defend our country should ever have to face the devastating reality of being homeless. The funds raised from your generous car donation will be used to provide food, shelter, clothing and many other much needed services to wounded war veterans.

Catholic Charities

Charity Navigator

Click to Donate Free - A directory of sites where you just click on links or complete simple activities and donations are given free by sponsors just for visiting their site.  Donations benefit those in need of food, water, healthcare, energy, education, protect the environment, and more.

ClothingDonations.org - Donate new or gently used clothing and other household goods urgently needed to help veterans and their families. Free pickup.

Craigslist Free Stuff - Choose your region and go to the free items category.  Post things you no longer need and those in need will directly contact you to pick up.

DonateMyDress - Provides free prom dresses to the disadvantaged who can't afford them.  You can donate a dress in person or by mail.

DonationTown - Find a charity that will pick up your donations for free.  See ClothingDonations.org above which also picks up.

Donation Value Guide

DonorsChoose - See what great teachers need for their students.

Easy Ways to Donate (Often Free) - You can give simply by just choosing how you use the internet to complete everyday tasks.

Feeding America - 37 million Americans rely on food assistance from this organization, the majority of whom are children.  Support their hunger relief program which provides food through a nationwide network of food banks to help put meals on the tables of your neighbors and their families struggling in this difficult economy.

Find A Food Bank Near You

Freecycle Network - Join Freecycle (a Yahoo group) in your county to get discarded free items people are offering, and give away free items you no longer need.  A great way to recycle, keep garbage out of the landfills, help save money and the planet.  This is different from barter or direct trading which can be taxable.  You do not exchange with others, but either give away free or get something free.

Give Forward - Fundraising to cover medical costs.

Global Giving

Good News Garage - Providing free cars to the needy in the New England area (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Islsand, and Vermont).  A Program of Lutheran Social Services - Don't need your car or it needs too many repairs?  Donate it for a tax deduction, and they repair it so a family in need can get to work, school, doctors' appointments, grocery stores, etc.

HabitatFor Humanity - Donate money, home goods, supplies, and/or your time.  Envisioning a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Homeless Shelter Directory - Half of the U.S. population is living below the poverty level and every day more and more are finding themselves homeless.  Locate shelters near you and volunteer or ask for their wish list of needed items.  These might include toiletries, clothing, blankets, interview clothing, furniture, and other items, many of which you might already have extra of at home where you can give even if you don't have any money to spend on donations.

Homeless Veterans Programs

Housing & Homelessness Charities

IndieGoGo - Find a wide range of fundraising campaigns that you can support and help make a positive difference from those that benefit the disabled to those that help launch new businesses, rescue animals, bring inventions to fruition, provide  medical treatments, promote science, education, social change, and much more!

Innocence Projects - Several of these programs exist across the country in a variety of states and within university legal departments. Wrongful convictions destroy lives and families, typically of the poor and minorities who are the victims, and usually result from police or prosecutorial misconduct.  Thousands of inmates have been found to be innocent since the advent of DNA testing with some of the incarcerated being released after having spent 10, 20, 30 or more years of their life behind bars, and many more await vindication and freedom, but innocence projects are overwhelmed and underfunded and can only help so many.  These are great projects to support!

Ioby - Brings environmental projects to life, block by block.

i to i Volunteering - Life changing travel.

Just Give - Find a charity to support, purchase a charity gift card, or create a unique gift registry for your wedding, anniversary, to celebrate a birthday, memorialize a loved one, welcome a new baby, etc. and guests can donate to  meaningful causes in lieu of gifts.

KickStarter - An innovative crowdfunding site that raises money to help fledgling artists, musicians, designers, dancers, directors, and others advance their careers and creative projects.

Kiva - This is not truly a charity, but you're helping people so I thought it was a good place to list it. Thru Kiva crowdfunding you can personally lend $25 or more to help people start their own businesses with projects in most countries, including the United States. Low risk with a good history of repayment and long track record of success.

Listia - A get and give free marketplace.  Get credits for giving stuff away free you don't need anymore, and then use the credits to bid on other items you want that are being offered.

LocksOfLove - If you've got long hair, the next time you get  it cut save your tresses and donate them to this great charity that makes wigs for children battling cancer.
