Genealogical Resources


Many free and cheap genealogy resources exist to help trace your family history, which is becoming a popular pasttime.  Families are appreciating their past, wanting to learn more about their ancestors, the old country many came from, locate old photos, make scrapbooks and photo albums, and plan family reunions to bring distant relatives closer together.

Resources may include government facilities that maintain records like courthouses, archives, military organizations, or may be professional societies, private families and companies in the business of genealogy, religious organizations like the Latter Day Saints (LDS) and other churches that maintain records, researchers, libraries, newspapers, chat groups and blogs, and much more.

Access Genealogy - Comprehensive site with family tree search, many historical sketches, biographies, information by state, Native American reservation rolls, military records, cemetery records, and more.

Adoptee Connect - Worldwide adoptee and birth parent search registry designed to reunite adoptees with their birth parents and siblings.

All English Records - A one-stop site for English genealogy records including the United Kingdom census (England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland), English vital registrations, free BMD, English parish and church records.

Ancestor Hunt - earch for ancestors and locate your family surnames in some of the best and largest free genealogy databases online. Includes Bible records, coats of arms, court records, US and UK genealogy search engines, black history, Ellis island passengers, marriage records, obituary indexes, ship lists, prison inmates, and a lot more!

AncientFaces - Browse and contribute vintage photos online.

Archives.com - A great digital genealogical records site that is now by subscription, but the cost is still much less than other comparable subscription services, so for serious researchers its probably well worth the cost (around $35 a year) for unlimited downloads of images, documents, newspaper articles, military records, yearbook info, birth and death indexes, and other family information often not found elsewhere for free.

Bible Records Online - Dedicated to transcribing and digitizing the contents of family records that were written inside family Bibles and in other important documents from as early as the 1500's.

Castle Garden Immigration Center - An educational project of The Battery Conservancy with free access to an extraordinary database of information on 11 million immigrants and transcribed ship manuscripts / manifests from 1820 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened.

Cemetery Junction - Helping the genealogy community find information about their ancestors by posting cemetery lists, many transcribed by volunteers - an excellent source for genealogical research.

Census Diggins - Free census records and genealogy databases including state archives, marriage records, orphanage records, newspaper abstracts, Scottish and Irish genealogy links, Civil War records, and more.

Census Finder - A global directory of free census records including United States, Canadian, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, and Native American census records by country, region, city, county, or state.  Also, message boards and genealogy tips.

Census-Online - Census records from the U.S., England, Wales, Canada, Ireland, and Scotland.

Civil War Soldiers & Research Data Base - This comprehensive American Civil War research database contains over 4 million soldier records with additionally regiment chronicles, rosters, and photographs.  This database is not free, but charges a reasonable fee.  It is $10 for a visitor's pass or $25 for the entire year.

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Web - A massive established genealogical research directory.  Has links to family sites, ships lists, maps and plat records, adoptions, African-American genealogy, church records, worldwide genealogy databases, divorces, family Bibles, medieval and ancient genealogy, cemeteries, wills, and much more!

Dead Fred - Free Genealogy Photo Archives.  Post, search, preserve, record, remember.

Distant Cousin - Free genealogy library with over 10 million records and scanned images of historical documents from a wide variety of sources, such as newspaper obituaries, city directories, census records, ship manifests, vital records, school yearbooks, military records, and more.

DNA Testing - Trace your ancestral origin with DNA genetic tests.  These are not free, but the costs have been coming down.

Ellis Island - From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, travelers, and crew members came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York.  Search for passenger records, manifests, and images. Also, free printable forms including pedigree charts, family group sheets, and passenger arrival logs.

FamilyRelatives.com - Irish, British, & US Records - Only the overseas records can be accessed for free with registration.  Other links such as to local parish records require payment.

Family Search - A service provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).  Worldwide collection of billions of names with family information extracted from a variety of records including birth, marriage, probate, death, military and land records.  Records are cross-linked to other names for ease of tracing your family tree ancestry.

FamilyTreeGuide - Manage your own free online family tree, control access, and view submissions from others including images.

Find a Grave - Locate the graves of ancestors, view photos of tombstones, create virtual memories, and more.

Fold3 - Huge collection of original military records scanned in and viewable as images.  Although they offer a subscription, a great deal of information is viewable when you search without joining.

Free Printable Genealogy Forms - Online forms to record your pedigree, abstract census and ships manifest records, compose letters, request records from the National Archives and other agencies, record information from deeds, request PERSI articles, and more for your genealogy research.

FreeREG - Free UK parish register search from Rootsweb.

GenCircles - A genealogical information-sharing community.

GenDisasters - Events that touched our ancestors' lives. Obituaries, hardships, articles on natural disasters experienced, accidents, and unusual events such as floods, train or automobile wrecks, fires, explosions, hurricanes, mine collapses, or some other type of disaster or tragic mishap.

Genealogy Buff - Search for free thousands of vital records by surname including county marriages, county deaths, state and federal census records, birth records, immigration records, obituaries, etc.

Genealogy Locator - Free deep search genealogy resource.

Genealogy Spot - Network of genealogy resources.

Genealogy Trails - Volunteers dedicated to free genealogy.  Helping you track down ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historiccal data for the free use of all researchers.  Includes Native American and slave data, maps, military data, and other research aids.

GeneaNet - Search and view free worldwide online family trees, archives & indexes, and pictures.

GenesReunited - UK family history research site.  Search family tree information and other data for free after registering.  They also offer access with a paid subscription to other databases and genealogical resources, although less expensive than some other genealogy service providers, with lower cost short-term one-month access available.

GenForum Family Message Boards - Post genealogy queries and responses on the discussion boards by surname.  Link up with others related to you researching the same names.

GenWeb - Run by volunteers working together to provide free genealogy websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States.

GenWed - Free marriage records and online directory.

GeoNames - U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Historic Place Names Search.

Heritage Quest - With a library card view for free census records, search family and history books, Revolutionary War pension and Bounty-Land Warrant applications, Freedman's Bank records (1865-1874) that served African-Americans, articles, memorials, and petitions.

Historic MapWorks - Search and view online old maps for free.  Only pay if you order a download or hard copy.  All types of maps including countries, states, counties, and cities with names of land and business owners.

I Dream of Genealogy - Family history databases, naturalization records and other court records, directories, church records, newspapers, social security and military papers, biographies, cemeteries, marriage records, Bibles, letters, photos, and heirlooms lost and found.

Immigrant Passenger Lists - Access to Archival Databases from the National Archives.  Germans, Russians, Italians, & Irish Arriving in 1800s 

Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild - Over 12,000 searchable ship passenger manifests transcribed by volunteers plus numerous passengers  listed in special projects.

Interment.net
 - Free online library of cemetery burial records from thousands of cemeteries across the world.

Land Patents Search - Live access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States, including image access to more 5 million Federal land title records issued between 1820 and the present. Also images related to survey plats and field notes, dating back to 1810.

LDS Mormon History Center - Worldwide collection of billions of names with family information extracted from a variety of records including birth, marriage, probate, death, military and land records.  Records are cross-linked to other names for ease of tracing your family tree ancestry.

Lloyd Reeds Global Map Collection - Donated rare map images held at the McMaster University Libraries in Canada.

Marriage Search Engines from GenLookup - A directory of United States marriage search engines for select counties.

Migrations.org - Exploring the migration paths of ancestors.

MyHeritage.com - Has an extensive genealogy network of members with a forum to share family trees and photos, with links to message boards, a genealogy center, and a research area that uses keywords in the Megadex utility to perform deep searches with results including some free data and others that require payment to view.  Free to register.

National Archives - Research project where can browse thousands of genealogical-related holdings including naturalization and immigration records, passport applications, bankruptcies, censuses, military service records, land records, and more.

National Obituary Archive - Repository of obituaries and death records. Visitors may search the archive freely to learn about the deaths of friends or family or to explore relationships when building family trees or doing genealogical research. 

Obits Archive - Comprehensive indexed collection of obituaries and death notices extracted and compiled from U.S. newspapers.

Olive Tree Genealogy - Free searchable genealogy transcriptions at your fingertips.  Maintains ships lists, Canadian and American genealogy records, military records, genealogical info from New Netherlands / Amsterdam (New York), Palatines, Huguenots, Mennonites, Native Americans, and more.

One Great Family - A subscription service not as expensive as Ancestry that claims to be the largest universal family tree using a genealogy handprint technology to merge related people in databases and help create connections.

Past Connections - Reuniting Old Lost Family Items, Bibles, Records, Memorabilia

Rails and Trails - Topographical and transportation maps, timetables, pictures, and histories.

Rootsweb - Taken over by Ancestry, but so far still a great site with many of the features remaining free, especially the searchable World Connect Project is an invaluable resource to genealogy researchers.

Social Security Death Index - The only place you can get access to this information currently for free is by registering with GenealogyBank.com at the link provided (although the viewable record does not contain all the same information as was on the original records, which you can order from the Social Security Administration last I checked for about $27 - up from $7)

Surname Search Utility - A genealogy search tool designed to help find surnames on family tree pages across the web.

Tombstone Transcription Project - Recording tombstone inscriptions now---before they are lost forever to the winds and the rains.

Tributes-Online Obituaries - Local and nationwide obituaries with a living memorial wall, tributes, photos, and obituary and funeral home alerts.

World GenWeb - A non-profit, volunteer based organization dedicated to providing genealogical and historical records and resources for world-wide access, including Asia, Africa, the Mediterranean, Middle East, North and South America, Europe, Ireland, and the UK.

World Vital RecordsWorld GenWeb - subscription genealogy service with a very brief free trial period.  Cost is comparable with similar other services, although they do have some unique databases including Australian collections, maps, a card catalogue, a digitized family history book collection, Filby's passenger and immigration lists, and numerous others.

Zabasearch - A very useful people search service that shows former addresses, phone numbers, birthdates and relatives for free.  To get more details without paying, click on a main name, then click "Get the Dirt."  If you click the wrong link it will try to sell you a background search.
